Many years of relative peace pass after the end of the last great war. Human populations are splintered and begin to diverge, forgetting each others very existence. Most of The Family gain human sects.
Rising out of the chaos that mankind was in in this era is a powerful empire formed by Xefreth I. This extremely powerful man is reputed to have had a demonic father and passed unusual traits to his entire line. The Xefreths lasted for 14 generations from 5600-4200 B.L. and their empire stretched from Lendoor in the west to the Djarmasian mountains in the east, and from northern Stoak in the north to the central Arir in the south.
These cults dedicated to the Lord of Insanity brought down the oppressive but orderly Xefreth Empire and sought to establish a society of madness on Telurr. The wars lasted only three years before the Xefreth's City of Eternal Magnificence fell and an era of anarchy began. The priest-warlords of Ssendam began conquering every human population in the area of Telurr now in the Empire and the Erg of the Arir. This reign lasted only one hundred years. When the Ssendamians decided that non-human races must join them or be eradicated then the elven councils decided to take action.
Elves had been so decimated ages ago by the plagues of Iarulac that few guessed how many were actually left until this intervention in human affairs occurred. The elves had been mostly spared the warring that had been evident on Telurr in the recent ages and their population had swelled in their secure forest retreats. The elven armies swept across what is now the northern Empire and completely obliterated all traces of Ssendamian influence. What was left of the Ssendamians broke into war with itself. A few ruined temples in the southern Empire are all that remain of these madmen and most of these places are shunned by those who live near them.
In the year 3900 B.L. the Pharaoh Esthith I united the nine cities in the Phir River Valley and formed Elthea. This great society spread across the southeastern portion of this continent and achieved the status of a truly magnificent culture. Their trade tongue was adopted by many human and nonhuman groups, their clergy successfully appeased most of the gods, they invented improvements in agriculture and magic, they kept the knowledge of the world in their libraries, and they built huge structures for worship and artistic value. This society lasted until the year 1000 B.L.
In the year 3100 B.L. a few wizards formed a protected city in what is now Ermid province. They used their spells to guard against the bandits and monsters that dwelt in the dark forests of this area. The power of this safe city began to grow and by the year 2950 B.L. or so they had become the obvious center for a new government. They spread their influence across what is now the southern Empire and the Jevvel mountains. This was a time of great magic during which the Mhulin wizards tried to perfect humanities knowledge of dweomercraft. Near the end of this era a group of mages unsatisfied with their role as protector decided to seize control of this realm . The secret of immortality had been recently rediscovered by the wizards of this era and many of evil bent were willing to undergo the dark rituals. When they awoke around the year 900 B.L.after their transformations they found their society destroyed.
In the year 1000 B.L. the end of the Elthean society occurred. Sages are still unsure as to the nature of their collapse but it apparently took less than a decade, or perhaps even as little as one year, to wipe out this civilization. The Mhulin Cities vanished at about the same time but it is not known whether these events are related.
In the year 919 B.L. according to elven historians a group of evil Mhulin archmages awoke from their transformations into immortal undead forms thinking to seize control of the Mhulinean Hegemony. What they discovered was that their society was destroyed. They quickly decided that each of them individually was most fit to rule this new empire of the dead and a great war broke out. The Lichlord Nightbay, as he came to be known, rose to absolute dominion over these undead, those who would not follow him hid themselves or were destroyed. His reign lasted until the combined forces of human, elven, and dwarven armies were able to seal the liches in their fortress and force them into an eternal slumber in the year 0 A.L.
Athon the Just lived in a lawless time when savagery and wickedness were rampant in the land subsequent to the fall of the Lichlords, a period lasting from 1 A.L. to about 250 A.L. From the lowest of men to the most powerful distrust and anarchy reigned. Athon created a way of life that he hoped would bring an end to the constant warring and destruction. He first set down a codes of ethics as law in his realm and began to enforce them with the help of his idealistic followers. The idea eventually caught on and his power grew as people came to see that they had a vital place in society. Peasants were owed protection for which they owed Athon their work of the soil. He created positions of authority to extend his reign to outlying areas, the barony was created. The barons were trusted followers and warlords that needed protection form their powerful neighbors. Eventually the most trusted barons were elevated to Dukes and his realm expanded further. The most important of the links may have been the warriors in the field who could be trusted with great responsibility and would die before they besmirched the name of Athon or his society. These knights were given a set of rules by which to conduct their lives. The rules they followed and the government he designed are still in use today and form the basis for almost all provincial governments in the Empire.
The many human kingdoms in the land warred with each other for a period of about 300 years (from 250 A.L. to 550 A.L.). Most regional boundaries currently in existence within the Empire were decided in these days.
In the year 552 A.L. the visionary Carromdinel the Victorious set out to end the wars of the human kingdoms and unite them all under his rule. In a twenty year campaign called the Great Unification he conquered all the 16 kingdoms within the current Empire, reduced the ranks of all nobles within these provinces, and created a central government near the center of his Empire. A period of peace and prosperity began. Carromdinel lived almost two hundred fifty years, quite a long time for a human. His heir, Kentur the Magnificent, lived almost two hundred years by making use of the same magicks as did his father.
During the reign of the Emperor Kentur the Magnificent many outlaw groups rose up and tried to reinstate the sovereignty of the the provincial governments. This movement was crushed by Imperial legions in 763 A.L.
Because of the stabilizing influence of the Imperial government provinces began to spend less on their armies and trade began to flourish. By the coronation of the Emperor Thonum the Protector trade and peaceful growth was noticed across the Empire. Few provinces maintain serfs any longer. Peasants, freemen, tradesmen, and merchants are the largest groups of people.
In the year 946 this structure was finished in central Mitrik. A wicked plot to subvert the lands around the Temple was put into motion. They came into the notice of Good in the year 949 when they boldly attacked the Baron Seryo's personal caravan. In this attack the Baron and his family were slain but a loyal retainer made it to the court of Duke Fothom. The Duke sent out a call for brave adventurers to rid the world of this blight and a powerful group responded. Led by the mage Iltren this group included the high priest of Celestian, Holohon, the warrior Desh of Lessarnia, the elven hero Cellen, and Borf the Mighty, dwarven champion. They drove back the evil menacing central Mitric and sealed the Temple with mighty enchantments. Later this same group eradicated a sect of Ecgror followers that infested southern Mitric and ridded Mitric of the last vestiges of this plague.
In Rheeven Province in the year 996 A.L. the eruption of Mt. Galaam signalled the attack of a demon horde led by the fiend Ndulu. The current Duke of this province, Kalmton, is said to have personally defeated this beast, saving his province from ruin. No one knows what fell circumstance allowed so many demonic beings access to the Prime Material at the same moment.
Most of Mitric had forgotten the building that had housed the greatest threat to Mitric in centuries when the Temple of Elemental Evil began to again stir in the year 1005. When a young Duke Thrommel realized the potential menace to his people he rode off to investigate. After his disappearance the power of the Temple grew until in 1010 a group of brave adventurers freed the Duke and reportedly destroyed the wicked inhabitants, forever ending the threat posed by this evil edifice.
South-central Mitric was once again a battleground for great forces when, in 1020, the Archmage Vulmeas made a bid for power. He opened a gate to this plane through which his Atluck warriors marched. His Atlucks were powerful reptilian humanoids with hypnotizing gazes. Vulmeas must have commanded some 16-20,000 of these troops which were almost a match for the forces of Mitric and the battle would have surely been lost except for the presence of the Emperor, his mages, and the Imperial legions. Vulmeas's keep was besieged and destroyed in the battle and Vulmeas was banished from the Empire.
Soon nasty, wicked things happen everywhere. Players quail at the power and evil nature of their opponents and DM's everywhere rejoice.
